1. What is FTP?

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol". It allows you to transfer completed web pages and their accompanying files from your home computer to your Crosswinds account.

2. How does FTP differ from the web-based Homepage Utilities?

The software for FTP resides on your own computer. You use it to connect to a special server at Crosswinds which is set up specifically to receive files you upload with your FTP software. The Crosswinds Homepage Utilities are located on Crosswinds' servers, and allow you to upload up to 10 files at a time to your account. With these Utilities, you may also create and edit your HTML files directly within your Crosswinds account.

3. What do I need to upload files with FTP to my Crosswinds account?

You will need an FTP client (application) such as WS_FTP LE, Cute_FTP, or another FTP application. (We do not recommend using the FTP function contained within many WYSIWYG page-building applications - some of these do not reliably connect to our FTP server.) You will also need an active internet connection, either dial-up, modem, cable, etc. If you are downloading FTP client software, you may also need an unzipping utility, such as WinZip.

4. How do I set up my FTP program?

Follow the instructions and Help files which come with your FTP software. You will need to configure settings for the Crosswinds FTP server, your Crosswinds membername, your password, and your remote host directory. The basic settings include:

  • FTP server address: ftp.crosswinds.net
  • Port: 21
  • Membername/Account name: your Crosswinds membername (lowercase)
  • Password: your Crosswinds password
  • Remote Host Directory: a forward slash ( / ) or leave it blank
  • Host Server Type: Autodetect
  • Passive mode: Must be turned off
  • Proxy settings: none, unless you are behind a firewall
Note: Personal firewalls such as ZoneAlarm cause problems when trying to connect, so they usually have to disabled while you are FTP-ing

5. Can I create sub-directories with FTP?

Yes. You can create sub-directories, rename, delete, and copy files, as well as the normal uploading you would expect.

If you still have trouble, note the error messages you get - these are often helpful in pinpointing where the problem lies.
